The red-backed fairy wren (Malurus melanocephalus) is a species of Australasian wren in the Maluridae family.

During the breeding season, the male of the species stands out with black upper parts and tail.

A brilliant red back, and brown wings. While breeding, some men retain non-breeding plumage.

The female has brownish upper parts and lighter underparts than the male.

This bird is native to Australia and may be found from northern Western Australia to Queensland and east of the Great Dividing Range down to north-eastern New South Wales.

These birds are mostly found in tropical grasslands, favoring tall grasses like blade grass. Arable land is also popular.

The red-backed fairy wren is mostly an insectivorous bird, feeding on weevils and other beetles, bugs, grasshoppers, moths, wasps, and cicadas.

They also consume insect eggs and larvae, spiders, seeds, and other plant debris.

These birds, which breed between August and February, are typically monogamous, however some males will mate with up to three females.

Some pairings even have caregivers to help them raise their children.

The nest is a spherical construction made mostly of dried grass and hairs that is hidden in tussock grass.

She will lay up to four eggs with reddish-brown markings there, which she will incubate for two weeks.

Both parents contribute to the raising of the chicks, which are completely fledged in around 11-12 days.
