These birds like tropical dry forested environments and arid scrubland, thorny thickets, bushy deciduous woods, clearings, and the borders of wooded edges at elevations of up to 3,000 feet.

Secondary growth, on the other hand, is more numerous than undisturbed woods.

The birds prefer to graze on seeds in the winter and insects in the summer, and their bills are smaller than those of other cardinalids.

The breeding season for the Orange-breasted bunting lasts from May through June.

During this period, a cup-shaped nest is constructed of rootlets, grasses, and dried leaves.

It is constructed in a low bush or dense brush. Within, a clutch of three to four bluish-white eggs is deposited.
