The male’s head is purplish-blue, while the remainder of his upper parts are electric blue, fading from deeper to lighter towards the tail.

His chin is gray, his throat and chest are blue, and his stomach and vent area are salmon pink.

Meanwhile, the mature female has a gray-brown head and upper body, with a bluish tinge at the rump.

Her tummy and chest are pinkish buff, with a warmer neck and a paler lower belly.

This bird may be found in and is unique to a relatively tiny region of southern Mexico’s Pacific slope.

Rose-bellied buntings prefer semideciduous woods and thorn scrub.

In the lower to mid-level of its habitat, the rose-bellied bunting forages alone or in couples. It feeds on grass seedlings and fruit from trees and shrubs.

These birds are frequently encountered alone or in couples, especially during breeding season.

Though nothing is known about breeding or nesting activity, two nests were documented last year in June and July.

The nests were constructed from an open cup of fallen leaves, shredded bark, and tiny weed stems.

Both structures were constructed in a sample, one 1.5 m and the other 4 m above ground level. Within, 3 to 4 eggs were deposited.
