The most noticeable aspect of this bird has to be its red primary feathers, which are only visible in flight. The tiny yet thick orange-red beak and white eyeliner stand out against the mostly green plumage.

There is a towering green white tipped crest, brown eyes, and a deep crimson eye-ring.

Males and females appear very similar; however, immature birds have a shorter crest without the white points.

Knysna turaco is a resident breeder in the mature evergreen forests of southern and eastern South Africa, occurring in a narrow strip of forest in Africa stretching from the North East Transvaal to Natal, Cape Province, and Mozambique.

These birds may be found in the evergreen coastal woods that stretch from the Western Cape to Mpumalanga, including eSwatini, up to an elevation of 1800 m.

Turacoes eat mostly berries and fruit, although they may occasionally eat seeds, leaves, and insects as well.

During the mating season, both sexes construct a little nest of twigs in a dense thicket.
