The Cuban Tody is a little bird that packs a lot of punch into its small body. It’s not much bigger than several small Hummingbirds.

A little, short-tailed bird with a large head and a vivid leaf-green back and head that quickly transitions to a geranium-red neck.

If that isn’t enough, it has a tint of blue on each cheek. It also has a large bill designed specifically for capturing insects.

Todies can be found hunting for insects across the island of Cuba’s forests.

As they pursue their prey, their wings make an audible whirring sound. If you can’t see one, you can find one simply by listening.

The Cuban tody lives all year in parts of Cuba and the islands off the coast of Cuba.

Based on song variety, the species appears to be divided into two populations that correspond to eastern and western Cuba.

The Cuban tody’s diet is dominated by insects, although it may also consume tiny fruits, small lizards, and spiders.

Although their ecology has received little attention, these birds are known to congregate in mixed-species groups.

They are also exploited as food by predators such as mongooses and people in impoverished regions.
