They may be observed mating in higher elevations in Costa Rica, with the males shaking their spectacular wattles to attract receptive ladies.

A mature male three-wattled bell bird is chestnut brown and around the size of a grackle, measuring between 25 and 30 cm (10-12 in) long.

The male bell bird’s body, tail, and wings are consistently chestnut-brown, and its head is white with a black eye-ring, eye-stripe, and beak.

It gets its name from the three worm-like wattles of skin that dangle from the bill’s base.
