The blue manakin, sometimes known as the swallow-tailed manakin (Chiroxiphia caudata), is a tiny bird of the Pipridae family.

They were once called as the “swallow-tailed manakin,” and they have the most blue on their plumage of any Manakin.

So much so that practically the whole body is brilliant blue, except the bright red cap, while the wings, tail, and head are black.

The female is a duller greenish-brown in comparison to the male.

Until they acquire their red crown, juvenile males resemble adult females.

These birds are mostly found in the Atlantic Forests of southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and far north-eastern Argentina.

Blue manakins prefer wet subtropical or tropical lowland forests, moist subtropical or tropical montane forests, and extensively degraded former forests.

Blue manakins feed mostly on tiny fruits and berries, as well as insects.

Food is frequently consumed while hovering near a limb or darting up to catch food before returning to their perch to eat.

Blue-backed male Manakins perform a cooperative, rather than competitive, mating display in which two males perch close to each other and alternately hop up and down, emitting buzzing noises.

When a female arrives, the perching male goes backward behind the other leaping male, eventually completing a vertical circular movement.

The female then proceeds to construct a next off of twigs from a certain tree.

She will lay two brown-mottled white eggs, which she will incubate for up to 20 days. She is also the only provider for the chicks.
