A small bird that is actually a rainbow of colors, with stunning tints of copper, blue, green, white, yellow, and red!

The chestnut-backed tanager (Stilpnia preciosa) is a kind of bird that belongs to the Thraupidae family.

This species’ male has a shimmering rufous head that fades to a more coppery tone along his back.

His rump is golden, while his tail, wings, and back are black with a blue border.

The majority of his chest and belly are blue-green, with yellow on his center belly and dark buff undertail coverings.

His wing coverings are white, with black lores around his eyes and on his head.

The female is a duller variant of the male, having a more greenish upper side and underparts with washed-out cinnamon under tail coverts.

These birds are found only in southern Brazil, northern Argentina, eastern Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Chestnut-backed tanagers tend to reside in and near woodlands and forest margins at elevations of up to 1000 m.

Chestnut-backed tanagers eat a broad range of fruits, including cultivated types, and spend time in the canopy foraging for insects.

While foraging, they often join mixed-species groups.

Other than one nest-site in the Rio Grande do Sul roughly 10 m up in thick fronds of an Araucana tree, nothing is known about this species’ breeding process.

There was no more information. The Chestnut-backed tanager is not currently endangered and is abundant in the areas where it lives.
