Mandarin ducks were only presented to the western world in the twentieth century, but some escaped and established their own feral colony.

As you can see, the male is an eye-catching bird from every angle.

His bill is red, with a white crescent above his eyes, and he has a red face with “whiskers.”

His breast is purple, with two white verticle bars and ruddy, almost bronze-colored flanks.

On his back are two orange “sails”.

The female, on the other hand, has a white-rimmed eye with a stripe able to run almost behind her head.

She also has a comparatively tiny white stripe on her flanks and a yellowy tip to her bill.
