The Andean guan (Penelope montagnii) is a tiny species of guan, about the size of a chicken.

It has a long neck, tail, and throat and tarsi that are partly feathered. Its general plumage is brown, but the margins of its head, neck, and breast feathers are white.

The top sections, including the upper tail-coverts, are brown, which contrasts with the duller brown tail.

The flying feathers are also a drab brown color. The belly, vent, and under-tail-coverts are predominantly crimson.

With a grayish white forehead, supercilium, ear-coverts, and cheeks, the head is paler than the neck and breast.

Lores’ naked skin and eye ring are gray. A vivid crimson wattle is visible hanging from the throat.

The bill is gray with a light tip. The eyes are a reddish-brown color.

Males and females have essentially similar appearances, except for adolescents having browner plumage with mild vermiculations on their underparts and whiter sides of their face and throat.
