The first and only example was collected in the 1840s and was never seen again in the wild. Only one stuffed specimen remained to prove the bird’s existence.

The story of the black-brow babbler, however, is far from over.

Muhammad Suranto and Muhammad Rizky Fauzan, two local men from Borneo, Indonesia, came across a bird they had never seen before, captured it, and even photographed it before releasing it back into the wild.

The two men shared their photos with birding groups, where ornithologists quickly realized what an incredible discovery they had made.

The photographs taken have helped researchers better understand what a live bird looks like and the territory in which they live.

“This bird is often referred to as ‘the biggest enigma in Indonesian ornithology,'” Gusti Akbar said.

“It’s mind-boggling to think that it’s not extinct and that it’s still alive in these lowland forests, but it’s also a little frightening because we don’t know if the birds are safe or how long they may survive.”

New research may be used to recommend that the black brow babbler be designated as a threatened species.
