The silver-breasted broad bill (Serilophus lunatus) is a medium-sized broad bill that measures 16–17 centimeters (6.3–6.7 in) and weighs 25–35 grams (0.9–1.2 oz).

The nominate race’s plumage consists of a rusty-colored head with an ash gray forehead and a broad black super cilium (stripe) over the eye.

The breast and belly are white, with a bright rufous rump and upper wing coverts.

The flight feathers are an eye-catching blue and black, and the tail is also black. Young birds are similar to adults, but have shorter wings and tails, as well as slightly darker plumage overall.

These birds can be found across much of South East Asia, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

The silver-breasted broad bill feeds primarily on insects like grasshoppers, mantises, centipedes, larvae, and relatively small snails. Insects are caught on the wing or by gleaning branches and foliage from perches.

The silver-breasted broad bill’s breeding season lasts from March to August.

These birds have only one mate. The nest, a bulky untidy ball of twigs with a lateral entrance, is hung from the tip of a tree branch two meters above the ground.

Both birds contribute to its construction.

Within, a clutch of three to five glossy, white, oval-shaped eggs is laid and incubated for about 15 days.

Because they are blind and featherless, the hatchlings are strongly altricial and helpless. Both parents incubate and care for the eggs.
