Distinctive bird, named after the striking red “horn” of exposed skin on the tip of its head.

Adults have horns that range in length from 1.6 to 2.4 inches (4 to 6 cm).

Above, this huge cracid is glossy black with a blue-green shine.

With black specks, the foreneck, breast, and upper belly are predominantly white. Brown on the lower belly and flanks.

A prominent white stripe runs along the base of the tail. Horned guans have a little red dewlap as well (loose skin hanging under the neck).

Males and females are quite similar; however, the lengths of the tarsus, wing, tail, and horn are somewhat longer in males than in females.

The legs and iris are red, while the beak is yellow.

This species is widespread in western and central Guatemala, as well as in southern Mexico’s Sierra Madre de Chiapas.

The horned guan lives in cloud forests with lush undergrowth at elevations ranging from 2,000 to 3,500 meters.

Horned Guans are mostly frugivorous, eating fruits and green plants, but will occasionally consume invertebrates.
