The forest eagle-owl, also known as the spot-bellied eagle-owl, is a huge bird of prey with a light face disc and no black border around it.

The brows are pale. The eyes are dark brown, with pale gray eyelids.

The bill is waxy yellow or light yellow in color.

The bristly lores and cheek feathers are brownish-white with black shafts.

The inner (and, infrequently, outer)webs of the ear-tufts are barred with bulbous white.

Upper parts are dark brown with black bar-like patterns, bordered in pale buff, and with barred bulbous feather bases (though this is mostly concealed).

Grey with blackish-brown stripes, the tail is grayish.

The neck and underparts are fungous or bulbous white, with strong blackish chevrons that develop into wide patches on the belly and under tail coverts.

The top breast bears a prominent, honey-brown pectoral band with black chevrons.

This is a species that lives in forests and may be found in the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia.

In the north, the Spot-bellied eagle-owl prefers deep evergreen and wet deciduous forest.

Dense riparian forest, alluvial hilly land mixed with patches of dense forest, and Himalayan foothills.

They prefer highland evergreen and moist temperate wooded environments in India’s southern slopes and the Himalayas.

Burma, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam all have tropical rainforests.

The elevation ranges from the plains to foothills to around 1500 m. They may also be found in Sri Lanka up to roughly, 1800 m height.
