Arthur De Jong, an environmental planning manager, witnessed and photographed the unusual scene.

Scientists are baffled after seeing the youngster interacting with its mother on Whistler-Blackcomb Mountain.

They think it’s an albino bear or a ghost bear. Both of these results are the result of a genetic mutation that affects their pigmentation.

But we won’t know for sure until someone observes if its eyes are pink like an albino’s or not.

‘I’ve been told repeatedly by bear specialists that its hue is the product of recessive DNA from both parents.’

‘The mother is definitely a black bear,’ he continued.

According to whistler bear specialist Michael Allen, this is the first time he has seen a white bear cub in this location in 23 years.

“I’ve seen cubs ranging from black, reddish-brown, chocolate-brown, to blonde (after summer coat bleaching).

But I’ve never seen a cub with pelage this pale to virtually white in this group.”
