The male is a magnificent bird in its full state, yet he is often overlooked since he spends much of his time hiding in the foliage.

Apart from his golden crown, he has full black upper parts and scarlet underparts, with a buff-yellow under tail.

The Yellow-crowned Gonolek is found throughout equatorial Africa, from Senegal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo east to Ethiopia.

These birds prefer deep undergrowth environments in woods and other woody regions.

It is not as timid as some other bush shrikes and can be spotted on well-watered hotel lawns.

The Yellow-crowned Gonolek feeds on insects that are found in shrubs or on the ground.

Monogamous bird breeding can occur at any time of year, although it is most common during the rainy season.
