The Trinidad motmot (Momotus bahamensis) is a lovely bird with an eye-catching head pattern.

A black beak, and a long racquet-like tail.

Their back and wings are green, and their upper tail is green at the base and blue at the tip.

The middle pair of rectrices is substantially longer and has racquet-like tips than the other tail feathers.

Rusty-brown underparts with isolated blue and black feathers across the upper breast.

The crown is black with an azure-blue stripe running from the bill to the back crown, making an incomplete diadem.

Below the black mask is a short blue malar stripe that tapers to a point on the side of the head.

The nape has a bleached buff color. Males and females have extremely similar appearances.

Although juvenile birds resemble adult birds, they lack the blue and black top breast feathers of adults.

Their mask is primarily sooty black and lacks the lengthy racquet-like tail of adults.

The Trinidad Motmot is exclusive to and unique to Trinidad and Tobago.

The Trinidad Motmot may be found in the lowland evergreen forest of Trinidad.

It is more common in Tobago than in Trinidad.

And is found mostly in cocoa plantations, sandy beaches, and open environments such as pastures with huge trees.

The Trinidad Motmot feeds on invertebrates found on the ground in leaf litter.

It hunts for spiders, insects, and other invertebrates by following swarms of army ants or tiny birds.

It may take tiny reptiles and juvenile birds on occasion, but it will also take mollusks and earthworms.
